Situations like this are tough, and I think everybody's feelings on this are valid, regardless of what they are. It's real easy to just think these crimes don't deserve clemency, bury them in the prison and forget about them, and there's certainly merit to this position. I definitely used to think that way, But then, when I did my minor in CJ, my professor took the class to a maximum security prison, and I sat face to face with a guy doing life in prison for a murder he committed at 16. He was 60 years old. He has been in prison for over twice as many years as he had been alive when he committed the crime. In that time l, he had become a pastor, gotten his master's of divinity by correspondence, and was working on his PhD. He became a chaplain to a lot of the guys inside, had helped a lot of inmates get their education, and even helped run a drug and alcohol addiction support group. He was a better person than I was, certainly.But he was a black male doing life in prison in North Carolina, and no governor was gonna grant him clemency, no matter how many letters people wrote. And I pondered now the same question I was confronted with back then: what is the point of the penitentiary system if we don't buy into the base premise that people can change, and reform themselves. If we're not willing to fully commit to that, we might as well take these people out behind the courthouse as soon as they're convicted.We all fell in love with Morgan Freeman's character in Shawshank, and celebrated his release. Why do only fictional characters get that privilege?
