I am a redneck sonofabitch so i just wait for sales and buy bulk. There's always some holiday or seasonal sale going on and these loss leaders are what i buy in bulk, vacuum seal and freeze them. Like for example i got some turkeys on sale for 60c a pound randomly and bought like 6 of them. Then the thanksgiving sale is like wow 99c a pound what a great deal!(not). You have to look for deals. Yesterday i bought like 80 dollars worth of black walnuts for like 25 dollars. You see i do this with everything and then i sorta have large stockpiles of everything i can mix and match. The only thing i don't buy cheap are fresh vegetables(well i try) but i mean i will pay standard price for them because i want to eat them. Another thing hard to find cheap is milk. I used to buy the clearance milk only before it expires but i found out it's not worth it because it's not fresh and can make you sick. Also i mix and match these sales with discounts from the store and apps. Sometimes the store will have the same item on sale that they are marking down. Because they get the new items in and restock the shelves. The items rotated out aren't even close to expired and get them half or more off(it depends on who is marking them down) sometimes kids or a negligent employee will even mismark items and get them like cheap. I get thousands of dollars worth of stuff cheap.
Has anyone noticed that toothpaste and shampoo are marked up considerably in most grocery stores in the US? Toothpaste is $1.99 at Lidl and at the regular grocery store it is like $8. Shampoo is $2.99 at Lidl and $5 everywhere else. Somehow they make it all in Germany and ship it across the ocean and still it is cheaper than domestically produced stuff.

But if you mean certain stores will have the same brand higher than another yes this is the case for convenient stores vs large chain retailers. You don't buy toothpaste from Walgreens for example they have it marked up just as you don't buy oil from a gas station.
