>TAIPEI — Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. (TSMC), the world’s largest chip foundry, has won a lawsuit against a former R&D employee who leaked secrets including 28-nm process technology to Samsung, South Korea’s largest company.

>Taiwan’s Supreme Court decided in favor of TSMC against Liang Mong-song, a former senior director of R&D at TSMC’s Advanced Modules Technology Division. After leaving TSMC, Liang became Samsung’s System LSI division chief technology officer.

>“Liang has to quit working for Samsung from now until the end of this year,” TSMC Director of Corporate Communications Elizabeth Sun said in a telephone interview with EE Times. TSMC may file more lawsuits against Liang in the future, she said.

>The suspected leak of technology may have helped Samsung catch up and surpass TSMC in leading-edge 14-nm FinFET chips that foundry customers such as Qualcomm and Apple are designing for next-generation mobile devices. When TSMC launched its 28-nm products in 2012, the company went unchallenged in that technology node for nearly two years.

After Liang left and joined China's SMIC, Samsung shat the bed again with their fab, losing both Apple and Nvidia to TSMC.
>>
>>524683458
Wow I didn't know someone else knew this.

Samsung actually had to poach TSMC from Taiwan to stay competitive. Before that they were heading for the shitter.

Pretty much everyone is doing this shit.
Intel is shitting the bed too. Guess what they're doing? They hired a very high level TSMC exec, who by coincidence brought a bunch of very important document with him to the US. His home got raided by Taiwan police.

https://www.reuters.com/legal/litigation/intel-denies-tsmc-allegations-that-executive-leaked-trade-secrets-2025-11-27/

Japan is trying to get to cutting edge chip fab. Guess how they plan on doing that? Tetsuro Higashi was the former CEO and President of Tokyo Electron, who is now the chairman of Rapidus (Japan's cutting edge fab project). Tokyo Electron is one of the TSMC's suppliers, and a couple of their employees were caught spying.

Wrong, Samsung was THE king of fabs from 28nm down to 10nm. You either don't know or willfully ignore that TSMC hired Samsung engineers to breaking into the sub 10nm nodes. TSMC only took the lead with 7nm due to shitty management from Samsung (who they removed and restructured last year). TSMC still hasn't been able to bring their GAA node, let alone BSPD, to production where as Samsung is already shipping GAA.

As for Liang Mong-song, he was forced out of TSMC due to his age (along with others who where his peers) and so he left for Samsung but only lasted a few years before leaving the company back to Taiwan. He was meaningless. This is no different that Taiwan suing Intel currently for another former TSMC lead who left Taiwan. Taiwan just gets petty as usual.

>TSMC still hasn't been able to bring their GAA node, let alone BSPD, to production where as Samsung is already shipping GAA.

Because TSMC focused on transistor density. Samsung released a tiny ass chip in small volume used only in their smartwatches to claim to be "first", while it can't event beat TSMC finfet in transistor density despite being GAAfet.

TSMC is releasing GAAFET with their next node, wanna bet whose gonna get blown out of the water again?
>>
>>524684141
Chinks use stolen tech to make folding screens too. Chinese like to say they have the most researchers in tech but all of their efforts are worthless as they produce NOTHING of value or isn't an iteration of existing tech someone else made.

Chinks are only good at stealing (but not good enough to not be caught).

>>524684225
Times have changed. Samsung is winning more FAB customers than TSMC and with TSMC unable to prod line their GAA/BSPD nodes they are falling behind Samsung and even Intel who has BPSD on track. Then you factor in Taiwan's decision to keep external fabs 2 nodes behind is going to make things worse as US based companies are more and more pressured to us US based fabs for national security and economic reasons.

The tides are changing, Samsung is going to get the crown again by 1nm.

>>524684565

Face it, Shitsung couldn't get the yield for bigger chips for their GAAfet product, which is why there was nothing else on it until 2026. Unfortunately for Shitsung, they'll be getting stomped by TSMC 2nm by then.

Micron closed down their DIRECT to consumer lines (Crucial). Their memory chips are still sold to companies like Kingston, ADATA, Team Group,Corsair, etc who still make consumer products.

What actually happened is Micron shifted their business model to match their two larger competitors, Samsung and SK Hynix, who don't sell direct to consumers but to ODM/OEMs.

This move by Micron is blown out of proportion by gaymers who have no clue as to how the hardware industry actually functions.
>>
>>524685375
I don’t see how is overblown by consumers, DRAM prices of all sorts are going to stay fucked for the next couple of years, minimum.

This doesn’t just affect gamers, it’s every device that uses RAM of any kind. From small SBCs like the Pi, to smart phones/tablets, TVs, automotive, computers, consoles, etc.

I understand Micron supplies the chips to other manufacturers just like Nvidia does with GPU dies. But Micron could easily choose to allocate 90% of their production to server RAM since it’s guaranteed sales and at a higher margin. What company wouldn’t? Those other companies you listed are at the mercy of the actual DRAM chip makers for supply which is the entire problem.

I mention MU because it’s on the American stock market, the others are on the Korean market. Similar with Nvidia, easy gains because the hype.

Another issue is SSDs, which use similar NAND chips made by the same companies and wafers/fabs. So allocating fab from NAND to DRAM means less flash memory, you’ll see this spike prices too. Compound with the fact that data centers need hard drives and those aren’t meeting production from WD/Seagate, they’re buying SSDs to fill the storage gap.

It’s all going to cascade big time. You can make decent gains investing in those companies though.
>>
>>524685926
DRAM prices are fucked for a few more years REGARDLESS of Micron killing off the Crucial line or not. Even if Crucial was around, you'd still be paying a shitload for DDR memory due to AI companies buying up 40% of the global supply of DRAM chips.

The decision by Micron to exist direct to consumer products has no real impact on your DRAM prices and availability as a consumer as it was fucked to begin with.
>>
My current Samsung phone will be my last Samsung product ever. And probably Korean product ever.
And since they're exiting the consumer SSD market and RAM is prohibitively expensive, it wouldn't even affect my future PC builds.
They saw what western vassalage did to Japan, they're responsible for their own destiny now.

Yes I didn’t say Micron was responsible for the price hike. Just that they were pivoting because it’s obvious what’s happening and makes the most business ($) sense for them to do so. I called them out for American investors because it’s an easy one to make money on. Similar for WD/Seagate, and maybe even Intel/AMD but I don’t think CPU demand will be as much and their GPUs aren’t for AI really. Still kicking myself for selling AMD that I bought for $2 lol.

Pic is of price graph for 2TB Samsung 990 SSD from PCPartPicker. You can see flash memory prices starting to go back up and it’s directly related to DRAM. Same wafers, same fabs, supply will be squeezed.

Prices for things will go up as bulk purchasing agreements expire. Apple’s is rumored to expire Jan 2026 so we’ll see how they respond with their product pricing this year and next. Expect to see similar across other OEMs and electronics.

I think at some point people will switch to AMD and Intel GPUs (battlemage are looking decent) because they’ll be entirely priced out of Nvidia. Imagine a xx70 costing xx90 prices.

Japan was fucked out of the semiconductor industry by many factors, including 100% tarrifs by the US. Japan was actually so good at it the US claimed they were cheating or something, lol. It’s pretty bad considering we were the ones who helped them jumpstart their semiconductor business. Fun fact, the blue LED was developed by Japan in 1993. Without it, we wouldn’t have modern screens since you need RGB leds.

Japan also didnt embrace the fabless-foundry model like TSMC which end up hurting them in the long run. Compound that with economic issue like the 1985 Plaza Accords and 1998 Asian financial crash (done by Soros and the Jews btw).. it was rough.

Japan is still on 40nm tech and trying to jump to 2nm in a couple years (lol good luck). This is basically their last chance to rejoin the semiconductor race though, if they don’t now it’s over.

Unfortunately for Japan, they're our vassal. They invented using lithography to produce chips and also EUV lithography but failed to commercialize it due to their stagnant economy.

The 1986 US Japan Semiconductor agreement pretty much dealt the deathblow to their semiconductor industry along with the Plaza Accord.

Similar thing is happening to Taiwan right now, we're slowly "transferring" their semiconductor industry to the US, the only thing worthwhile on that rock.

Taiwan is going to disappear and TSMC, Asus, etc are becoming more reliant on jeet labor because low births and brain drain as Taiwan has the lowest paid tech workers in the world.

South Korea and Japan only ever had one purpose in imperial US' end goal, which were warm bodies to throw against China.
Of course in the interim they were going to use them as soft power too. But China made its own anime, pop music, and phones so that plan failed.
And now even the warm bodies plan is dead in the water due to birthrates and drone warfare which renders people useless.
I'm interested to see what further plans the US has for South Korea.

No it didn’t, lol. Did you own one in that time period or are you just larping?

I was in college at the time and had a basic prepaid Nokia flip phone that didn’t even have T9 predictive texting. My friends had the Motorola Razr which was baller for the time.

Once Apple did the controversial price drop on the iPhone I bought it. It was a game changer, all my friends thought it was crazy cool. I was a big iPod Video person but having it all on this slim device was really something else.

Even though Edge (2G) sucked in hindsight it got the job done. I remember working at the grocery store and big wigs that shopped there would ask me about it.

Being able to browse the internet and do stuff like online banking and googling from a phone was entirely new for most people. Even the bougie people with their blackberry were envious because the experience on the iPhone was just better.

And this is all before apps were a thing. I try to love android but every time I make the switch I end up regretting it. I like the customization aspect of it and more homebrew less walled garden… but a lot of it is also half baked. Devices with a lot of power with still laggy UIs capped at 30fps, with battery drain that makes no sense.

>all you gotta do is this and that and the third

Toyota is already working on SSB tech and plans to have it in mass production by 2027/2028. They will be direct replacements for current lithium ion batteries in EVs, but the tech will obviously work for any device that needs a rechargeable battery.

It will happen and will happen soon and be the next big leap in battery tech similar to how lithium replaced traditional batteries (like Ni-MH/Ni-Cd, alkaline, wet cells).

SSBs are better in every regard, especially safety. There will be no problem commercializing it. The question every electronics and EV maker is asking is basically “when” it will be ready not if.

Not to mention it will be an easy retrofit for most products since it can likely retain the same 3.7V nominal charging curve.
