>>525755819The Greenland thing is still totally perplexing to me. You guys already have a military base there and used to have more. You could much more easily build more bases than try to take over the country. Trump unironically said it was for "psychological reasons" lol. But what is the real reason?
>>525756059It's a pretty convenient circumstance for denmark to have another country defend their colony on the other side of the world for free. greenland is critical for the defense of the US from either a nuclear or conventional attack, but of no strategic consequence whatsoever not just to denmark but the whole of europe. even if they wanted to, the entire military force of european nations as they currently exist can't even deploy to greenland in meaningful numbers let alone deter an attack from china or russia. The largest military powers in europe, france and britain, just concluded a meeting in europe for the potential deployment of their militaries in ukraine as peacekeeping forces after the war there ends. The entire plan hinges on US military support for the deployment of their troops, they literally cannot deploy a useful amount of personnel to a country they are connected to by land even for a peacekeeping mission without the assistance of US logistics and coordination. The US military has been planning defense strategies for a potential chinese attack on taiwan for decades, and the ludicrously more powerful, experienced and capable US military that is 2/3 of total NATO expenditure by all accounts would be heavily strained trying to maintain a war effort across thousands of miles of ocean to taiwan. Now think about what this means for europe and greenland. What this means is that europe quite literally has ZERO capacity to defend greenland and by extension the united states. Any forces they have there are essentially symbolic. The question is then, what right do they really have to insist on maintaining ownership of greenland? The only possible explanation is that they want the US to pay the bill for maintaining the security and stability of the territory while they reap any possible economic benefit either now or in the future.

>>525757974Isn't Denmark paying a bunch of money to the natives in Greenland? Why not let them keep doing that and just build up the bases + make deals for mineral rights etc.
>>525759972That's likely what trump is actually attempting to do, but apparently the money in greenland isn't minerals because they are too costly to extract, it's space communications which can only be placed in locations inside the arctic circle. The chances that trump will actually attack greenland are basically zero, he's twisting their arm as hard as he can twist because greenland is so critical to the US and that's what he always does anyway. The europeans are playing it up because the hysterics benefit them politically at home, just look at what happened with canada and carney. Likely the europeans will give trump whatever he is asking for in greenland while simultaneously riding the wave of popular support at home from having supposedly prevented a US invasion and the end of NATO and the earth splitting in two and whatever else their media says is happening.
>>525761697That does make a lot of sense. Thanks for the explanation
