Tropes tend to lean towards various extremes of the scenario, but it's also possible someone could show up and merely make it extremely well known that they're here, and everyone out there knows humans are a thing, but otherwise nothing special is going to happen. As in, "Well, we hope you don't kill yourselves, but we're also not handing you tech you're not ready for. Good luck, someone else will stop by in a few years to check up on you."

Anything else would escalate and make the more advanced alien look like a hostile invader to the rest of the alien community. Even in the case of giving them tech, that would be viewed as hostile if you knew it would lead to humans killing each other with said new tech to the point of extinction. So basically, only moral guidance. You would have incentive to do this so that the humans would be far less likely to be hostile when they go interstellar.
