Why aren't businesses and individuals who hire illegal immigrants being thrown in federal prison? E-verify is free to use. Knowingly hiring illegals is a federal crime, see The Immigration Reform and Control Act of 1968. What we're doing now is like arresting drug users while allowing drug dealers to continue selling drugs.

The federal government could probably arrest a few hundred thousand people by subpoenaing Home Depot and reviewing their parking lot security camera footage for the hiring of illegal day laborers.
