To be part of NATO you have to accept that the official languages are English and French, so all staff officers are trained to speak in one or both. This is carried over to the armies of member states, and during training operations orders tend to be given in English when any multi-national force in involved.
I think that we should have an EU armed force. But not as a replacement of the national armies. It should be a separate entity that picks up whatever we are left with when NATO is disbanded and we decouple from the USA.We already have all the handbooks and experience to what the command structure would look like. Just take the NATO handbooks off the shelves and create that command structure. That should be phase 1. Immediately following that: Military Satellites feeding directly into the command structure. Next it should take over logistical duties that the US is able to provide to give the national armies strategic depth to deploy wherever they need to be. Then we need to get into hard power: a stealth bomber fleet, mrbms and icbms, nuclear weapons for deterrence, one full sized European heavy armour division. After that: a carrier strike group and a nuclear submarine fleet for global presence.
