If SCOTUS rules against tariffs, it'll be the US taxpayer that pays for all the damage. If you work, if you have any debt, if you get entitlements, etc, you will get eviscerated if the tariffs are removed. Good luck. 98% of the people in the US are staring down the barrel of a gun.
>>
>>525833581
Why the fuck CAN'T he apply tariffs? It's fucking ridiculous to think he wouldn't have the authority to do so. Then who does? Congress? I doubt it.

Meanwhile Slick Willy changed the annual decision of MFN status from Congress to the State Dept via EO. This is when China was not favored due to recent human rights violations in Tiananmen Square.

Then of course his wife became State Department later and always gave China MFN status which is what allowed them to rise to economic power (and thus militarily). All while diminishing our own military back home.

But Trump can't set tariffs? Fucking bullshit.

>other countries should pay tariffs equal to what we pay
That isn't what he's doing though.
Those numbers he put on that chart are all bullshit. For example, the tariff from the EU on the US was around 3%, not 10 times that like his chart said.

The numbers on that chart came from asking chatgpt to take the annual balance of goods traded divided by the total number of imports. Trump believes this is a 'tariff', which is not what a tariff is.

Although some of the numbers were complete gibberish, for example, Ireland and Australia both had a trade surplus with the US, Ireland's exceeding 58 billion dollars, Australia around 17 billion dollars. So by Trump's logic the US was ripping those places off, yet both of those countries ended up with a massive US tariff being put in place anyway.

Another example is Trump claiming Canada has a huge dairy tariff on the US. This is also bullshit. Under the USMCA that Trump signed in his first term, by Trump's own words it 'eliminated the dairy tariff on our producers'. So he's undoing his own deal that he said was a great thing...

The USMCA does have a tariff on dairy only if it exceeds a certain threshold, which has never been anywhere close to being met, which means Trump was correct the first time.

The whole thing is retarded.

I'm asking because I was told, constantly by the left, that tariffs were a tax on the citizenry paid through inflated prices that companies wouldn't absorb.

These judges are compromised and working against the future of America. If this one is overturned, it will have been due to intent to harm the US.
Biden had 100% tariffs on Chinese automobiles. Other countries have tariffs on us.

Not really unless the tariff rate is allowed to float in real time based on whatever metrics they decide to use which ideally wouldn't be manipulated by foreigners. His goal isn't "fair" trade deals. He didn't and still doesn't give a fuck about trade; he wants to annex what we need and then become an isolationist with a military he can use to lash out at others when he wants. Duh. He is absolutely right on non-tariff barriers though and America was definitely getting ripped off in that regard by other developed economies.
For example, many US-made cars were banned from being exported to Europe for years under the pretext of environmental concerns, but as it turns out German manufacturers had been cheating emission tests all this time. European countries have become experts at finding legal gimmicks to protect their domestic markets and circumvent free trade agreements.

>>

>when blackrock buys your house
That only happens because governments have made it prohibitively expensive and complex to get permission to build anything. Blackrock wouldn't be buying homes if there wasn't an artificial scarcity.
Immigration also adds to the problem, but even places with low immigration levels still have overpriced homes because nobody is allowed to build anything.

The legal debate actually centers around whether his EOs on tariffs are justified by Section 301 (Trade Act of 1974) which allows the President (via the USTR) to impose tariffs as a remedy for unfair trade practices or violations of trade agreements, Section 201 (Trade Act of 1974) which allows "safeguard" tariffs if the International Trade Commission (ITC) finds that an import surge is causing serious injury to a domestic industry, and the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA) which grants the President broad power to regulate international commerce during a declared national emergency.

While Democrats have their retarded demand subsidy fixations like national rent control, as we've seen under Trump's second term, so do vast swathes of the Republican base.

Country A imports 99% of the total goods from Country B.
Country C imports 1% of total good from Country A.

Country A has decided to increase tariffs because it noticed that the goods they were selling to Country C was being tariffed heavily and that this will be considered fair play.
Country A also believes that through the magical mystical force of the free market that suddenly products will be made in Country A and that they will buy less from Country C.

Country A also believes Country C will pay these tariffs.

That's the same thing every large economy does. The US has a similar system to protect Tesla's being outcompeted by Chinese electric cars. It's protectionism in other words.
That's fine when it comes to tackling China, but if you want to tackle China it means making better deals with all your allies, not telling them all to get fucked and forcing them into the arms of China, which is what's happening.

Trump hasn't made any better deals with the EU because all of this stuff is about his own emotional grievances anyway. He dislikes Canada for example so they get a big tariff, he gets on well with Starmer so the UK gets a smaller tariff, it's all emotional nonsense.
