To fight inflation they can raise rates but that has the opposite effect. During the Biden years, when inflation was at the highest it’s been since the 80s, Powell went against every economist and Wall Street pundits saying we need to raise rates to combat inflation. He waited until the very end of bidens term to start hiking rates, leaving a mess for Trump. Now that inflation is back to normal levels, he’s reluctant to lower rates back down, coming up with every excuse in the book (even though Fed is suppose to be data driven, not forward looking). Essentially he delayed the Biden stock crash to now and trumps been doing everything he can to keep stocks up dispite the high rates
