It's common for workers in certain fields to travel for their job and stay in a motel for a few weeks or months until they move to the next job. You can get a cheaper rate if you sign up for a longer term stay. Usually it's lone men but it's not far fetched that some might bring their wife and kid with them.
Alternately, it could be a family who has been temporarily displaced by fire, flood, etc. or maybe just having renovations done.
