there is no sense in which they are capitalist. in china it is seen as acceptable that the state has authority over the whole economy. china allows free markets but only for the benefit of the state, and the state can interfere at any time to do what it wants.

In all military parades, the communist flag is first, Chinese flag is second. They've basically worked out a way to take growth that capitalist societies have and funnel that to their own system.Deng Xiaoping is a genius for this.
