Snowshoeing is an extremely based sport because you can do it pretty much anywhere with snow, even off-trail. If you live somewhere around lots of public land you'll never have to encounter anyone else while snowshoeing, much less endless lines of smelly jeets and chinks. The main problem with skiing is that there's a bottle-neck built in, e.g. big accessible hills.

A bit of a blackpill is that it'll feel weird if you have no friends like me. People who ski are turbo normies and show up in groups of 5-6, so it might feel weird while you jump on lifts with huge friend groups. You'll also be on the beginner hills with children and fresh off the plane jeets. That all being said I still had a good time getting some cardio in.

If I were you, maybe try to find a hill in a wooded area somewhere and just learn the basics over a week or two so you can show up and have actual fun on the intermediate trails.

The harsh reality is that skii/snowboarding is 90% posh kids that did it growing up as well as people with giga social circles, so chuds like me stick out like a sore thumb. But if you learn to not give a fuck about anyone, the views are great

being honest:

if you are new to it you have to be ready to:
- spend thousands of $$$ for equipment
- spend hundreds $$$ each day you ski
- fall a lot
- possibly feel scared and out of control (when learning)
- spend $$$ on a lift ticket and maybe have a very disappointing day because of limited visibility, rain, crowds, etc
- food & drink on the mountain is very $$$
- hotels are very $$$
- everything in the town is very $$$ (duh, it's a ski resort)
- if it's somewhere like Whistler or Aspen most people are rich and sometimes in social situations with new friends that can get uncomfortable and spin out of control fast ("let's go to this restaurant" and you find out your drinks were $100+ and your meal was $250, etc)
- speaking more than one language is a big plus (mix and match any of English, French, German)

- it's also really easy to DIE while skiing, and there are a lot of ways to do it
>>
>>525933260
I used to do both.
People who get obsessed with one or the other and dog on the other are cringe.

Look for used XC Ski equipment online or at second hand sports shops, it usually is pretty inexpensive for old stuff.

Only if you're a burger
>if you live close to the mountains
You're probably already skiing
>if you don't
Make a one-week roadtrip to your closest ski resort.
>hotel and ski pass and meals for 5 days: 1000€
>ski lessons: 200€
>ski rental: 100€
>gas: 100-200€ depending on where you live
>ski gear from scratch (clothes, helmet): 300€
>other random bullshit: 200€
Total: 2000€ for the first time. Next time will be half as expensive AT MOST.

most of these can be easily avoided with intelligence and planning, in this economy i would never buy new equipment, i would learn on shittier cheaper hills with smaller terrain and only go on a week day after a fresh snow. low visibility days are not really an issue when you are learning, i actually love low visibility days when its dumping snow. its cozy.

don't worry about being alone
i ski alone most of the time, unless I'm doing something dangerous (lifelong skier, former racer, freestyle, big mountain)
a lot of great skiers from McConkey to Morrison spent a lot of time skiing alone.
no one is judging you

not a burger, as you can clearly see from my flag

agree with all those points

Not as great out here, but still within driving distance of my family down in PA/MD. I had only the tiny hills too, and 45+ minutes away. Now I can see Killington from my window.

One that's a leaf you are replying to, and two prices are somewhat comparable.
Here in burger land (Colorado) ski passes are around $150-300 a day, depending on where you go. You can find deals that include lodging around $150 a day if you book ahead of time.
Too many people these days though, traffic is fucked on I-70 to where on the busy weekends you will literally sit in a car for 7 hours straight just going from Denver to Breckenridge/Keystone area.
My gfs dad works for Vale resorts though, so I can get 1/2 off tickets and occasionally get full comps (free) and I still don't just because of the sheer amount of time involved. Might try to go up this season, but we have been getting very little snow so far this winter.
I have known Coloradans who literally go to Park City, Utah or fucking Austria because they are so fed up with how many people come here now.

>ski passes are around $150-300 a day
So just the ski pass for 5 days would eat up 75% of the budget of 2k I set up. Lmao

>Snowboarding is like flying a fighter jet
>skiing is like driving around on a vespa
get the feeling you're not very experienced at either cause that's just a bizarre thing to think.
esp since skiing is objectively faster than snowboarding and control while skiing is much more precise

fastest skier ever: 255 km/h (157 mph)
fastest snowboarder ever: 203 km/h (126 mph)

going to an mlb game is fun, a very different vibe than other sport. kind of a picnic vibe. (only seen games at Yankee Stadium and wherever the Blue Jays play)

if you had an investment that paid out even like 2k USD a month and a decent slush fund for repairs you could float around a tropical paradise forever

sport are generally not fun until you're good at them; swimming being the most understandable example lol
>>
>>525925994
lol. i'd like to see you go as fast as me skiing. then maybe do moguls inbetween. i've learned to ski on wooden skis with no metal edges. you should try.

Whether you are handy and can do repair yourself at a cost, or you got a good chunk of residual income to be invested in your personal happiness.

the whole idea of skiing is to drift sideways for change of direction. apparently you never even tried.

I like swimming but I suck at it. Biking, rock climbing, cross country running, skiing. I'm shit at practically everything, doesn't mean I don't like them. But, baseball and golf are too boring for me.

i can fix everything myself(worked at boat shops) its the cost of moorage and haulouts that will rape you over time. thinking its some escape from society is always a fucking con sold by influencers

while ago at st.anton a goddamn american teenager crossed my way without looking up first. i was able to closely avoid her, but she raised her ski poles and it hit me right across the kisser. upper lip had to be stitched and looked like i had a blue table tennis ball injected. needless to say, apres ski was disappointing that week. oh, and her father came up to me and tried to blame me, shouting. when he noticed the puddle of blood that began to form in the snow he quietly handed me a hanky and skied off. yeah.

Are Rocky Mountain actually good? They have a stigma in NZ because they were originally sold in a chain store that did mid-range furniture and electronics and dabbled in sports stuff for a bit.
Like someone will roll up on a new one pretty stoked, you take a glance, and see the badge and stop there. Don't even bother to look what groupset etc.

Also... kayaking is the shizz.
