being honest:if you are new to it you have to be ready to:- spend thousands of $$$ for equipment- spend hundreds $$$ each day you ski- fall a lot- possibly feel scared and out of control (when learning)- spend $$$ on a lift ticket and maybe have a very disappointing day because of limited visibility, rain, crowds, etc- food & drink on the mountain is very $$$- hotels are very $$$- everything in the town is very $$$ (duh, it's a ski resort)- if it's somewhere like Whistler or Aspen most people are rich and sometimes in social situations with new friends that can get uncomfortable and spin out of control fast ("let's go to this restaurant" and you find out your drinks were $100+ and your meal was $250, etc)- speaking more than one language is a big plus (mix and match any of English, French, German)- it's also really easy to DIE while skiing, and there are a lot of ways to do it

My gfs dad works for Vale resorts though, so I can get 1/2 off tickets and occasionally get full comps (free) and I still don't just because of the sheer amount of time involved. Might try to go up this season, but we have been getting very little snow so far this winter.
