College degree has been a standard in USA to be competitive in many fields and YES that recommendation and goal might be a bit outdated and plenty of people chase the prestige but don't actually go all the way to capitalize on it.

Ask them if they think they are good people, and without a second thought they will say yes, because thinking they are good is fundamental to their sense of self. And the same goes for their intelligence.

The simple fact is that most people these days go to college, and they didn't really make any decision or effort to go there. They were going to go to college anyway, but since they did, it's a convenient justification for their already existing belief that they are smart.
Had college been inaccessible for them, they would simply find another way to justify their existing belief that tehy are smart.

In any conversation, no matter what it is, before any words have even been uttered, they are convinced they are right and can do no wrong, because they are smart people. And so when someone does disagree with them, then obviously that person is stupid and must be corrected. They see no reason to listen to anyone else, because they already know everything, so there is no reason to listen to anyone else.
