"Tolerance" originate in a latin legal term, meaning an acquired right to do something despite it going against another's right, because that other party had not claimed that right before. As in, my dad allows our neighbor old lady to walk her dog on our terrain instead of using the street, everyone in town does. If my dad woke up tomorrow morning off the wrong foot and this day said "No, you can't walk on my lawn with your shitty dog!", she would have had the ability to go to court and claim a tolerance, forcing him to allow her to walk, based on the fact that he had allowed her for a decade before and nothing changed since. Usually, unless something changes, the court will issue the tolerance. Anything changes, dad decides he will put in a path, open a bed and breakfast, new owners arrives, the tolerance falls. In general usage, tolerance means allowing something you dislike, because you don't dislike it enough to cause trouble. Its purely a negative emotion. Alterity, on the other hand, means what most people think tolerance means, which is celebrating differences for themselves. So, really, tolerance isn't wrong. But we can't forget that tolerance means there's something out there we didn't really like either. If society becomes purely, only, always tolerance, than you are asking its constituents to always be suppressing some small amount of frustration. Who the fuck wants to live there?
