A millennium ago some Danes went there and settled the south. About 300 years ago a Dane named Hans Egede decided to take a trip back there to see if they're even still alive and discovered pretty much nothing but a handful of random nomadic Eskimos wholly unrelated to the old settlement, decided to Christianize them and claimed Greenland for the kingdom. That's why it's Danish today.
