1972 was the last year for true carb muscle cars, exception is the Buick turbo Regal/Grand National v6 if you count that. I always wanted a boat tail but no space in the garage, my Dad had a70's Buickelectra v8 225 limited, not a muscle car but i remember as kids we would sit in the back seat and put our feet up when he was at a stop light and be pushed back into the seat when he put the petal to the floor :D

Honestly at this point as far as classics are concerned, GM has effectively won. I mean Ford guys, Mopar guys are basically in denial.

Simplicity and interchangability won. The Chevy Small Block won. What does it say when you can buy a crate SBC for a 1/3 of the price of any crate Ford etc.?
>>
>>526098190
The classic car hobby requires a garage which disqualifies most men under 35 right off the bat but of course this gen X boomer doesn't understand that.

>>526102179
That car would be incredibly slow by today's standards. This guy's Corolla >>526100481 probably does 0-60 in half the time.
>>
>>526102806
Every car is depreciating in value, some just more than others. When your modern shit car is averaging $50k per car, you are not making money on your classic car investment.
>>
cars are a ludicrously expensive hobby. I cant even get a cheap car to beat on these days.
>>
>>526103620
You have Hotrodders, restorers, Restomodders, and tuners. Boomers tend to either hot rod or tediously restore. Gen x either restores or restomods. Millenials either restomod or tunes. Everyone younger only tunes.
>>
>>526103702
It's not really an investment in my eyes. It's about building a better machine than anything else I could buy, not making a payment, and being able to do all my own work on it.

You have to be smart about what you get. For some things parts are plentiful and cheap and the systems are simple (aka GM). Some classics parts are expensive and rare.
>>
>>526103919
None of those things are possible in an apartment that will threaten to tow your car as soon as you pop the hood or roll a jack under it. That's the reality for under 35's that guys like OP's Xer love to ignore. Frankly it never even occurs to them that the damned garage/home is the filter because they've always owned one so they take it for granted.
>>
>>526103620
A properly rebuilt classic will get more power and torque than almost anything you can buy off a lot. The downside will be gas mileage and whether or not it has an overdrive gear.

In general modern brakes are way better than classic brakes though. The only real advantages of a new vehicle over a classic rebuilt vehicle are: gas mileage, brakes, and overdrive (even though a fair few of classics do have OD or have been converted).

In terms of all around function 1995-2010ish was the high point for automobiles though generally speaking.
>>
>>526104313
I sympathize but just to be clear I am under 35.
>>
>>526104359
No it wont, you're a stupid nigger. A modern crate engine will take a heaping shit on any old boomer garbage. Boomers are obsessed with "Big Block Chevy" and can't stop talking about it, but it sucks, it also can't put the power down on old chassis and suspension.
>>
>>526103702
the VIN number itself has value, even if the rest of it is a complete rustbucket. old cars cane be repaired forever. new cars have computers that crap out and good luck getting a replacement

Lol absolute clown- take trucks for example. For about 20-30k total you could have a classic truck that is better than a modern medium size truck in most ways.

More HP, more torque, solid front axle, more robust transmission, and stronger (albeit rougher) suspension. This is just a fact. I dont even think you can buy a truck with a solid front axle today. The only areas the modern truck excels is fuel efficiency, ride comfort, and braking. But here's the kicker- it isnt a fucking overcomplicated monstrosity. There is nothing on it (aside from the transmission) you cannot do yourself for a fraction of the cost of the new one.

Do you even realize what an important factor it is to be able to actually work on a vehicle on your own cheaply? In your tiny mind does it not register what a monumental factor that is lol?
>>
>>526104577
Also just to make you even more retarded- a modern performance crate motor is probably going to run about five times the cost of a classic fully dressed. I mean you can get a quality performance SBC fully dressed for like 5k and any swinging dick could install it DIY in a weekend.

Then what you are going to buy a modern crate performance motor for 25k and then hire a team of mechanics to work for 75 hours to install it? Kek are you stupid?
>>
Unless you have a small penis, your car should be a basic 4 banger sedan, minivan if kids, or basic work truck if trades.
>>
>>526104873
A modern crate SBC will make like 430hp fully dressed for 7k. Brand new. blueprinted. Ready to drop in.

What is that? like the cost to replace the full headlight and tail light assemblies on a modern car? I think that is the base charge to just open up a modern sealed unit transmission honestly lol.

>>
>>526105404

>>
>>526105582
Yes you could probably rebuild cheaper but I think it makes sense to compare a new crate small block to a modern motor in fairness to the modern motors.
>>
>"when boomers die off classic musclecars will sell for pennies!"
The prices will drop slightly, but "for pennies" is just unrealistic. Average muscle cars will still have value just not the insane amounts booms are paying at auction now. Unrestored, low mileage, excellent quality cars will continue to command a premium. Actual rare cars will still hold value. Cars that were a special edition with more desirable engines that were made in limited numbers, not the "i know what I got crowd" of 1 of just 32 with am/fm radio, ugly color nobody wanted, built the last Tuesday of September, rare. Factory hemi cars, COPO, thunderbolt and other factory drag cars will always be unobtainium.
Muscle cars jumped in price because of boomers with nostalgia. In future years they will level out, but not hit rock bottom. Previous generations did the same with prewar cars, a run of the mill model A has settled down on price, but a duesenberg has done nothing but go up due to scarcity and prestige. Muscle cars will do the same.
>>
>>526105611

Just buy a common classic model in rough shape with good parts availability. Make it a project- take your time. Let's say you can get a rustic bucket for 4k? Over the course of a few years dump about 20k into it. You will learn alot. You will have some fun. And you will end up with a pretty decent automobile that you actually have some attachment and prode about because you basically built it.

Restomods and well built modified classic cars can hang or even out perform newer offerings.
>>
>>526105819
>Just a hotter cam and a little bore honestly.
No, it's a major modification.

Modern engine, modern transmission and drivetrain to handle the power, modern tires and suspension to put the power down, then modern disc brakes to stop the thing. After all that's done you claim oh this classic car is so much better than modern cars. It's so fucking retarded and unlike you I've actually owned a few cars that were built in the 70's so I know how terrible they were.

>A $600-$1,000 payment every month on a modern truck
I bought my current truck for $5,000. It was built in the 2000-2010 sweet spot.

>He goes in and breaks things
You've never worked on a car have you? Shit's rusted and seized, plastic becomes brittle, shit breaks. 30 minute jobs turn into hours, this is the reality.
>>
>>526106080
Thanks to televised auctions, car flipper shows, and the internet right now it's hard to get in to anything somewhat desirable because everybody with an old pos thinks it's worth $50k. You could settle for a 4 door base model, but if you're going to put the work and money in it sucks to have to settle, plus if you ever need to sell it the market still treats it as such.
>>
>>526098190
It's not dying, its dead. And "I know what I got" boomers killed it, stomped its ass into the ground. If you don't believe me look at the market. C10s that were 50 grand 10 years ago are 20 now but money is worth half what it used to be.
>>526098432
There is a classic car dealership in my town notorious for things like taking a squarebody with rusted through cab supports and selling it to some boomer for 40 grand. They don't even get old cars to list anymore, its largely just junk from the 00s on their lot now.
>>526098492
That has literally never mattered to car people, ever.
>"The easiest way to make a million dollars is auto racing is to start with two"
>>
Most of those boomer classics don't run, and the ones that do, you need to baby them and have extremely specific car knowledge from barely extant forum posts on wayback machine, the moment something fails you'll need a bespoke part, lots of rubber gaskets and tubes you can hardly find. That's why people don't want to pay 120k plus tax. You can buy a 2015 mustang gt and soup it up with a whipple to 650hp for a third of that price
>>
>>526106293
I would honestly rather have my vortec era OBS vs the subsequent era even though they are both good. It's my daily driver though because of the overdrive.

But even if you take a truck from like 2010 from a pure performance standpoint, the suspension is inherently weaker. It does not have a solid front axle. And although they are much more manageable than a modern car- they are a major step up in complexity. They are harder to work on. There are things I would not attempt on my OBS that I would do for fun on a squarebody. Repairability is one of the most important forms of performance.
>>

Not to mention the fact that cars back then had a lifespan of about 60,000 miles. Our 200,000 miles was their 60k. That, and the more primitive metallurgy that allows the boomer "classics" to dissolve into a pile of rust the moment the first snowflake hits the ground. Or the 8 mpg fuel consumption.
A V6 Camry has a better 0-60 time than a '67 Shelby. There is no point in buying boomer junkheaps for the price points they try to sell them for.

>>
Because for anything other than full size sedans its $20,000 starting and you often have to do a decent amount of bodywork. Why do that when $20,000 gets me a 2010s Mustang or 2000s Corvette that makes 400hp and isn't gonna be a rusty shitbox with drum brakes and a 4 barrel carb that 90% of mechanics won't touch (yes most mechanics don't know what the fuck to do when they're presented with a carburator even if its a 1980s car).

That and cars as a hobby has been winding down since the 2000s from increased urbanization + high insurance costs + less disposable income. Its why the hobby is declining every year whether you're in Japan, Australia, USA, Canada, UK, Germany, or France/Italy. Lower disposable income = people move into cities to find work that pays more = cars are more difficult to own since you have more space constraints. Urbanization is a direct result of computerization of society (can live and work on your computer at home = no need to go out, socialize, travel etc for some).

>>526107200
Can you even buy a 351 Cleveland anymore. Like literally do they even make them? All of Fords motor families were almost totally unrelated. With GM basically anything will fit on anything more or less. Mounts, intakes, housings, heads, its all just plug and play. I think GM only had like the suspension layouts. With ford it almost all steering, plaine counts, and suspension parts changes like every year. Ford has numerous distributor and ignition layouts.

Literally in every single major system Ford was a mess compared to GM simolicity and compatibility. And dont even get me started on that side mounting nonsense.
>>
>>526098190
Save for the boomer trophies like muscle cars made into 1971, I would agree.
Whenever gas prices get exorbitantly high, the classic car market and most vehicles with big V8 engines - Cadillac Eldoraros, Chrysler New Yorkers, Olds Deltas, etc - crash in price.
These cars were built extraordinarily well, they're very easy to work on, and the parts still cost jack shit.
Whenever gas prices go down, as they have been more recently, these cars appreciate in value again.

This is applicable to old cars in general. A cheap 2000s Buick is a much better ROI than a post-2015 stop start turbo 4-cyl that retailed for over $60k and had multiple engine recalls

My 90s chevy pick-up truck is worth more now than 10 years ago. I'm going to sell it due to the whole not having a job thing and needing money.
When I was younger, I wanted a 1970s chevy pick-up truck like my dad had. Absolutely no electronics on it. Those trucks now go for 20k to 40k depending on condition. You cannot buy an old rusted out POS for less than 10k.

From Ford Racing? No. Aftermarket has new blocks and heads, especially thanks to my Aussie brothers since the Clevo was still produced until th late 80s.
>All of Fords motor families were almost totally unrelated.
Sure we have the flathead, Y block, FE, Windsor (SBF), Cleveland(which is SBF-ish) and 385(BBF) and Modular and I can see why it's a an issue for mechanics(not my problem, kek), but I also work on my own shit save for EFI.
>With GM basically anything will fit on anything more or less. Mounts, intakes, housings, heads, its all just plug and play.
Damn, I guess I'll just plop some 409 heads on a 350 block, then! Then I'll take a 454 camshaft and shove it in my 383, right? Not to mention I'll take my 305 TBI intake and mount it on my 632 next, right?
>With ford it almost all steering, plaine counts, and suspension parts changes like every year.
I don't think so, Tim. Also wtf is a plaine count? Spline count? Input shafts almost always 10 spline. Yes I concede on distributor and bellhousing, but other than that, we aren't so dissimilar.
>Literally in every single major system Ford was a mess compared to GM simolicity and compatibility. And dont even get me started on that side mounting nonsense.
Again, for making money as a mechanic, NMP! Also, what side mounting are you talking aboot?

My dad kept an Auto Exchange from 1980 where 70 Barracudas were going for $400 because of the gas crisis and the national 55 mph speed limit.
The last time you could get those kinds of muscle cars out of a junkyard for cheap was probably in the late 80s, maybe into the 90s if lucky.
By the 2000s, those cars were going for half a million at Barrett Jackson auctions and it turned into a rich man's game.

home ownership in the US is falling each year, and the age of first time home owner ship is now 40 years old and still climbing.
people who don't have homes cant do these type of stuff.
and there are a lot of people with HOA's who cant do this type of stuff.
its becoming more and more uncommon with the age of first time home ownership on the rise and less and less people are become homeowners.

shits to fucking expensive for gen y and gen z to have as a reasonable hobby.

My dad has this issue and does not understand why i dont give a shit about his barracuda outside of "Wow thats a really nice car dad, i wont sell it if you give it to me when you die, because it would be sentimental" But beyond that i dont give a shit about working on it, or driving it because the thing is more expensive then my condo and car put together.
Simplest part breaks congrats that almost at minimum a $1000 dollar fix.

Its why i like motorcycles, if shit goes 100% tits up and i ruin the engine, i can buy an entire new engine or entire new bike for less then 5k.
The best part is, the only tools i need are hand tools not expensive ass ones like you need for a car. I need a 8-14 MM socket and congrats i literally have everything i need for my motorcycle.

Supply and demand. If you're not in to the hobby I'm sure you don't understand that a 15K rust bucket has the potential of being a 6 figure car depending on how far gone it is, and how low of a production it had.

Mexicans and South Americans buy a shit ton of used pick-up trucks from the USA. This also drives the cost up.
Rust Belt trash trucks cannot sell. However, Sunshine Belt trucks are wanted all over the place, so the prices are ridiculous. The old age, wrecks, salt water, salt streets, etc whittle down the numbers fast. So trucks lose value for the first 15 or 20 years, then start to gain value again.

You've obviously never driven a stock 70's car.

>The median age for a first-time homebuyer reached 40 years old in late 2025, up from 38 the previous year, and significantly higher than 29 in 1981.
>First-time buyers accounted for only 21% of purchases, a record low, indicating many are stuck renting
its pretty simple
boomers are completely fucking delusional about everything that's not in their own personal bubble.

Look, youre clearly just sandbagging at this point. Chevy really only had two engine families. And yes within the small and big block families pretty much everything is in fact interchangeable to a large degree. You know this why are yiu being obtuse?

The Ford situation is not comparable. I mean even once you get past the unrelated engine families, the suspension designs, the side mounting, the bell housings etc etc. The bigger problem is that everything changed like every year. Sometimes I go look at Ford parts for friends and I always feel sort of dirty because everything is 3x more expensive than what I end up paying. It's a bad situation.

DESU i think the group of people who like working on cars are going to find a boom in the motorcycle industry instead. I think you will see more of those poeple go there since a motorcycle is a lot more economically viable, and far easier to work on. You can completely rebuilt your engine in a fucking parking space or on the back deck of an apartment.

I'm old, I owned one of pic related in 1991. Believe me it was sought after, and for the time, expensive.
The opec gas crisis that killed the performance cars of the 60s was over by 1974. The effects lingered on, and spiked again in 1979. Sub $500 performance cars was mainly during this time, the malaise era. By the late 80s they were gaining in popularity, but pre internet it was not uncommon to score a deal on these cars until the mid eighties. When they caught on they jumped in price fast, just not to the astronomical prices we started seeing in the early 2000s.

I'm not? I am aware of the Chevy SBC/BBC dynamic. I don't really care. I just know that your claim of being 1/3 as cheap as Ford is complete bullshit. Again, I have to concede, but the reality is it's closer to being 5/8 cheaper if even closer to 3/4. If you want to bring up suspensions, I'll bring up all those Chevys with Mustang 2 and 9 inch swaps. Suspensions literally aren't even an issue. I would like you to point out to me this so called 'wide discrepancy' in the suspensions, as I don't see it. Again, WTF is this "side mounting" bullshit you're on about?

>Classic car market isn't dying said the boomer.
Man I don't care about cars but I always tag along with my buddy to these auctions so he can brow beat the shit out of boomers who think their rust bucket BMW's are worth a shit.

Hearing boomers brag about how little they paid for it and how much they want only to get told by a drunken dickhead belittle them "Id rather suck a dogs dick then be caught in this rat infested shit box."

I remember during 2008 all my friends and I got practically brand new cars for dirt cheap because the boomers got scared of the recession and tried selling everything they had for almost nothing. Can't wait for the second round.

Nice. I was born in the early 90s so I was priced out of those cars from the get-go. I was told stories about gas rations being doled out to even and odd numbered license plates on different days of the week.
I quite like malaise era cars. Granted, they're tuned to run like shit and the post-75s have cats, but that's all fixable. Otherwise, the good ones have old-fashioned craftsmanship, were built like tanks with those massive 5 MPH bumpers, and usually had lots of extra options for comfort and luxury to offset the shitty performance.
73-77 GM A Bodies in particular are the redheaded stepchild between two much more popular eras but they have a lot of good stuff to work with. I'd love to modernize one.
>>
>>526109769
>odd numbered license plates on different days of the week.
we have this retarded shit in costa rica. can't go to GMA (general metropolitan area) on certain days depending on plate number, and now they added even more retarded law that motorcycles with two passengers under certain CC (1100) are not allowed there
>>
>>526098364
Yeah pretty much. These gluttonous boomers bought these cars for Pennies and now want you to buy them because they are "old". They are assholes who just waited and hold onto these cars to sell them to the next dumb idiot who will collect cars like a retards. It’s like collecting coins or stamps. People don’t have money for that now and they simply don’t care
