Rome relied on shipping in food from all across the empire, but there was too much disorder by that point. Goths burst into the city, killed tens of thousands of its citizens, and the city recovered. Ironically it was actually the Eastern Roman attempts to retake Rome that finally killed the city. The renewed fighting ravaged the countryside across Italy, no one was maintaining the roads or guarding the sea lanes, it was too dangerous and difficult to move foot around. The people of Rome weren't slaughtered by barbarians, they fled into the countryside looking for scraps to eat. Most of them likely starved; Italy wouldn't see population levels recover for a thousand years. And now supply chains are strung all over the world. This is how dark ages happen.
