The point isn't just to realize this intellectually, but realize it through direct insight; that's what jhana/concentration is for. Jhana means to burn, you're burning away objectivity to reveal the antecedent Subject in the same way you burn away a haystack to reveal a needle. Concentration refers to the concentration of the SUBJECT by negating objects, in the same way you concentrate gold by chipping away the rock. According to buddhism, when you achieve gnosis you end transmigration, because transmigration is caused by clinging onto a new identity after you die. Without any desire to objectify yourself you don't cling onto a new identity after death. THIS is the ultimate goal of buddhism, not moralism, although that is conducive.

Concentration is always in reference to something else, in this case, it's referring to the concentration of what's antecedent to all phenomena and perception. The culmination of jhana/concentration therefore is the dissolution of perception, it's the absorption into the Absolute, the unborn, the undying (temporarily). So if everything that's not the Absolute, the unborn, the undying, is everything that perceivable, objective, and phenomenal, then you need to get rid of all that so you leave nothing but the former. Everything that is perceivable, objective, and phenomenal, appears in the first place because of attention. Attention is a doing, which is a perturbation, an agitation. So effectively, what you're supposed to do is to cease doing to the degree that you can. There are two types of doing, habitual, which you can't control, and volitional, which you can control. The only thing you have to worry about is whatever doing is volitional, cease that. The habitual doing will cease with time because it's fuel is your attention. Shikantaza is pretty similar to this I'm pretty sure, as is doing nothing. If you have a grasp the metaphysics it is easier to understand. You are returning to the point of rest which is antecedent to everything.
