I worked for a shop that did a lot of machining for the construction industry -- some of it on WWII era cam-timed machines -- and we could never stay staffed. Especially in maintenance. Go home every day smelling like burnt sulfur from the oil, with machining chips embedded in his skin and boots, and you wasn't to pay $2/hr more than a Starbucks barista?
