They're the same people in the end. Waging war against them would be catastrophic. They'd rule over rubble and a populace hellbent on revenge. There's no reason why China must take Taiwan by 2026, 27, 28, 45, 70, or in the next 300 years. None whatsoever. Odds are that the reverse will happen and that Taiwan will want to rejoin with China due to China's rapid technological progression.
