Housing prices are a literal non-issue in America. Our income to house cost ratio is better than in Europe. Yes, houses were cheaper in the 1950s, but that decade was an aberration in every sense of the word. The more salient problem is that much affordable housing is made unlivable because of the diversity and squalor that it entails. Any good place to live is in some car-dependent suburb outside of the city, and these places are thus at a premium.
