>US says Canada will regret decision to allow Chinese EVs into their market
Why did America push us away by forcing shitty one-sided deals on us and then get mad that we decided to improve relations with China as a result?

You bring up an interesting psychological talking point.

That is a similar dynamic, but as someone who grew up with a toxic family with doctors and lawyers, I was happier on the street homeless than bogged down with their drama. When I came back to get some stuff, they tried to convince me to come back and they couldn't believe I would rather live in a tent than deal with them. That was years ago, now they literally sneak around to see my kids because I don't want them getting too close to those people. I don't care how many presents they buy the mind games aren't worth peace of mind.

People only put up with things for so long. There is also an interesting phenomena that those with leverage don't have any incentive to change the status quo, so they really don't think about all the ways that things can go wrong because it's all good on their end.
>>
>>526209096
>how fucked things are for younger workers.
i lived in the US and saw this same thing about 15 years ago -- every job that was traditionally done by a student was done by a middle-aged Mexican or South American.
I wondered how American teens and uni students could afford college or whatever.

and now it is like that here (but it's not with Mexicans or South Americans up here)

NO ONE CARES!
Canadians buy mostly Japanese cars new anyways. The Canadians that buy pick-up trucks are probably not going to buy some EV. Canada does not even really build EV and the USA cannot sell EV at the price anyways.
Big fucking deal, a few Canadians will buy EV from China. I hope those people are happy, because the Chinese price is cheap. Doubtful they would have been able to afford anything else, so most would have been walking or public transportation.

We're not mad, we're genuinely worried. Your Trump derangement has ruined your country. You voted back in the liberals because you took Trump's 51st state comments literally when he was just coyishly trying to secure better trade deals. Venzeuala's liberation and possibly Iran's in Two More Week™ has made your oil industry redundant, but rather than make amends, you froth with rage and pull a "YO LIL DONNIE" by cutting off your arms to replace them with giant chopsticks. Carney sacrificed your auto industry for nothing. He couldn't even secure a guarantee that China would buy your oil, only that they'd consider it. The saddest part is you're too far gone to admit you fucked up.

Sounds like an unforced error by Trump. If he'd shut the fuck up and never said that, he would have a friendly administration. That's fine. Right wing parties are doomed to lose in Europe. It's for the best their leftist parties adopt anti-immigration policies out of necessity, because that normalizes them.

Because you don't matter and you've been taking advantage of us for years, there's no reason Ford and GM should produce in Canada, and the USMCS is just a bunch of bureaucracy to circumvent the consequences of that fact. How about we make Oshawa and Oakville look like Flint, and we bring production back here? We already have the plants.
>>
>>526207440
This isn't the 1990s anymore. The US doesn't have the power, influence or political capital to throw around these kinds of threats. Back then, Canada might have actually been scared of these threats, but now they'll just laugh them off since they know we won't actually do anything about it, because we simply aren't capable of doing anything about it.

Man, wouldn't it be crazy if there was some kind of partnership that went across the Atlantic and Pacific that more tightly integrated American, European, Korean, and Japanese R&D and industrial strategy. What a smart idea. Who would toss it away for no reason, right?

I wonder what the balance of power would look like with respect to the Chinese economy if something like that across atlantic or across pacific investment partnering had been in place for a decade. We'll never know.

>there's no reason Ford and GM should produce in Canada
Canadian autoworkers are more cost effective than American ones for 2 reasons. First the automakers don't have to pay American health insurance premiums because the Canadian public healthcare system covers. Secondly worker's wages are paid in our dogshit currency rather than US dollars.
Don't act like it's a one way street.

>>526210823

Most Canadians are urbanized and need not more than 50km a day to drive. The EV is for the majority not for niche application. The remote -40c 100km+ daily commute is really an outlier and miniscule within this scope.

>it seems like they are just getting fucked with the money being funneled out to fund welfare in quebec
They are getting fucked, but its a bit more complex than this, and its dumb of them to blame others for it, since *they* set it up. The equalization payment system was last updated by Stephen Harper, a conservative Albertan Prime Minister who was in office from 2006 to 2015. It was likely his plan to buy eastern sympathy and make Quebec and the Maritimes dependant on the Canadian economy to quell further strife. Albertans often forget to mention that the Maritimes receive higher per capita payments than Quebec, there's just a lot less of them.
Now Harper's political generation is out of office in Alberta and they didn't share the plan with their replacement, or possibly blaming the frogs is just too tempting, but Albertans can't reconcile the fact that this was the doing of their own pet party's golden boy, so they keep blaming Liberals for ruining the economy, which, sure, they probably did also, but, "Laurentian Elites" have nothing to do with Prairie taxes being funneled out.
