I tend to suspect that all professional sports are a sham. Since corporate sponsorships became the norm, athletes increasingly refuse to compete and just seek to be best of class in an increasingly bizarre number of classes. Being world number one in some snowflake code gets you a red bull sponsorship, being second in Olympic high jump gets you basically nothing. And with that comes players from poorer countries unable to compete at all. Bobby fisher was probably very good at chess, he was probably the best. But many players would have been better off they had equal opportunity to compete.
