If you're looking for the real reason, and why the EU deployed troops in a strategic gamble, it's because all parties in Brussels and Washington are looking to the future. A future where Trump plans to exit NATO and cut Europe loose to deal with Russian and Chinese aggression on its own. Something obviously Europe doesn't want. The obstacle in the way of this, as stated by Trump in a roundabout way, is that America needs Greenland to be self sufficiently secure in the Western hemisphere. Once America has it, the puzzle is complete. Fortress America can rule over its own domain without intervention for at least the next couple centuries while Europe and the rest of the world are slowly conquered by China and Russia. That's the calculus anyways. Europe has a major problem with this. So rather than actually caring about Danish sovereignty or Greenland's right of self-determination, which is the public propagandized reasoning why they oppose it - they are actually forcing America's hand to co-operate and stay intertwined with European security guarantees. Now they have to work together on Greenland and America can't retreat globally as long as EU powers have their hostage bargaining chips in the form of their own military personnel on the island.
