This is why the Island Chain in the south china sea is a pain in the ass, and why China makes artificial islands. They're much cheaper than carrier strike groups and cannot be sunk the same way a ship can get sunk.Ships are at a big disadvantage in 21st century Area-of-Denial strategy (see Yemen). By placing anti-ship missile batteries in Greenland the US can project power in the future shipping lane that will form when the arctic iceway melts permanently.
