If I support a group that causes damage to you, you probably wouldn't want to work with me. Naturally, people place incentives not to work with such opposition. This can either be to pay you to be on their side, or to punish you, if you are not.By placing negative incentive (punishing), you are (by definition) causing damage. This would naturally make enemies, as described. So it really only helps in gaining allies, if you are dominant.In the extreme case, people would have been found guilty of treason, for not explicitly stating their agreement with the dominant group. You are only overleveraged, if people start separating from the dominant group.This can be seen in geopolitics, but also on much smaller scales on how political movements develope. At some point it becomes hard to exist, I you don't explicitly agree with who is winning.
