They've been releasing collections for so long that you could grab the collections for classic or X that were released on PS2/Gamecube and still get most of them.As for how to get into them "lorewise", it's harder because they had multiple series going on at once that occur in the same timeline but in different eras, and also a lot of supplemental materials like books. The main timeline goes Classic, X, Zero, ZX, Legends. There's an alternate timeline that happens if Light and Wily get into AI instead of robotics, which is the Battle Network timeline.I'd suggest playing Classic and X games specifically with the intent to eventually play the Zero and Legends games, since they offer a lot of background context. But to be honest, I've been playing these games since they were new.
