In fact, taking it means taking on the costs of those living there, and the political consequences of the living conditions for those people. Not having Greenland as a territory, but still having the right to put military bases wherever it wants means the US can project its military power without incurring the costs of territorial responsibility. Trump wanting Greenland is a thing because before those agreements were in place, the US did not have access to Greenland and therefore could not project military power around the arctic. You'll notice historically that the US ceased all efforts to acquire Greenland as soon as the US had free reign to build what it wants.
