AI isn't good enough and modern cameras come with special cryptographic verification methods, called "Verification Kits" which use cryptographically signed metadata included in the pixels (yes) to verify that a certain image did indeed come from not just "a camera" but a certain serially numbered sensor in a certain serially numbered camera. These have been needed in court for over 25 years.But yes the media will just make up fake AI images and print them and pass them off as real, sure. The thing is they won't be able to pass the verification stage.

Addiitonally it is possible to uniquely fingerprint any imaging sensor, which is why you should always scale and blur and transform your images before posting them anywhere lest you have to post an image to "save the world" and thereby include your identity within.
Imagine , they already have centralized school systems and media, once there is stricter control they could just generate entirely fictitious history and tech it to the masses with AI generated photos and videos

Eventually it will get so bad video and images can't be used as evidence in court either because no one will be able to tell or trust if it's real or fake
