I think for some people renting is a good short term option so idk it isn't the worst thing in the world but how do you stop corporations from buying up lots of property

By making it illegal? It's rather straightforward, but it's not enough because individuals and wealth families could still do it. Therefore you must tax properties exponentially, starting from 0 in your first home, and raising a lot the more houses you keep out the market.
This does raise rent prices a bit, but actual home prices would fall and people will eventually acquire equity again. It is a matter of wealth equality.
