Polyethylene: 11 HVLs x 7 cm = 77 cm.
These are just estimations since the exact specifications are unlisted. But if NASA could engineer this type of equipment (on a return passage) and want it kept a secret, I can understand the perspective of "everything used was lost :)" As of right now, they have accidently placed themselves in a situation where it doesnt make sense. IT would have been overall better to say the footage was lost, the shit you see is not the final product of traversal. Right, the problem is it's like a 5 sec round trip from the moon (image from moon to Earth and then remote control from Earth to moon in response to that image). So you have to track a moving object with a 2.5 second delay and then another 2.5 seconds for your controls to affect the camera position. In other words, it's not possible to actually track the frame on the rocket this way. NASA makes some excuses for how they did it anyway of course.

If by "they" you mean congress, the people in charge of paying for moon missions, they did keep "the capacity to go to space". In the 70's, people were bored of moon missions, and wanted something cheaper. Congress decided to go with the space shuttle model, something that could go to low earth orbit "for cheap" instead of the expensive Apollo missions.

Now we know the shuttle wasn't cheap (but it was way less expensive than developing Apollo), so for 30 years Nasa was stuck just flying shuttles around. Congress didn't want to pay for anything else. When shuttle finally retired, those funds could go to more innovative companies and projects, and that's why in the 2020's we finally have more space shit going on.

If you have a better theory for why NASA stopped flying Apollo, go ahead and say it.
