Of course by the early 20th century, everyone in Europe saw the writing on the wall - the monarchies of old would soon be gone, and in their place a new social democratic system would take their place. The deposition of the monarchy meant that the nationalists in Ukraine were divided. On one hand, many thought that the White movement in Russia was an ally (wrongfully). Still others considered all foreign powers, including newly emerged Poland, was a threat to the Ukrainian identity.
