The problem with reddit is that regular users can just become moderators after they build up enough rapport with existing mods. Inevitably, someone will feel like moderation is too lax, and needs to be more strict to cater to their "tread on me harder, daddy" mentality. The people who believe moderation is too strict would never devote themselves to becoming a mod, because they don't see moderation of an internet forum as something that needs to be a significant job. Alternatively, if they do try to influence or even continually participate in that community, they eventually get banned for trying to have a fair discussion as in the OP.
Just remember things like this when leftists cry about free speech.
