The system is setup in a way that where neither side has any real incentive to reform the convict. After they get out its years and years of probation, usually with a felony on their record. and their employment options very limited. Even if not a professional criminal, all it takes is one mistake and the person goes back in with extra charges. The prison system is also mostly private with no incentive to teach inmates more skills or how to behave when they get out. The psychology while inside usually involves cozying up to the biggest pieces of shit that runs whatever clique you join, removing any encouragement or intention to change. prison is a losing proposition 99% of the time for the individual, first like other anons above said there's no reformative element to serving jail time in places like the uk or usa and you have to consider that the people who are in there for serious crimes like murder and rape more likely than not possess a genetic propensity for violence, which you can't "educate out" of them. then prison conditions likely exacerbate those violent tendencies given that in a lot of cases they come into close proximity with other violent inmates, then once you've spent a few years in jail and you're out, how are you going to find employment again? it's a series of things that compound on each other making rehabilitation and integration back into society almost impossible. for most career criminals prison is probably like a vacation before they go back to doing whatever on the outside.

I work as a prison officer and see the same faces in and out all the time. Prison should not be for reform, it should be so horrible you don't go back. Most of the prisoners friends and family are in prison so they feel at home when they come back. They can sit around watching tv, playing vidya, use the abundance of drugs, go to the gym and get qualifications a working man would have to pay for.

I worked as a prison guard for 6 months. 2 prisoners attempted a vain escape the day before their sentences were over because they wanted to get resentenced to another 2 years for trying to escape.A warm bed, 3 solid meals a day, lots of free coffee. They stand around all day smoking and drinking coffee. On the other hand if free they're out on the street sleeping in a cold damp bank entryway that smells like bum piss and bum shit. They starve.

Even though most low level gangsters actually earn less than a plumber.The only solution really is long prison sentences, maybe camps where they live a semi-free life or something like being on parole and they can work, but they are tagged aren't allowed to leave a certain area. Like Singapore or El Salvador, you basically have to take them off the streets at least until they're old or maintain good behavior for a long period. Drug rehabilitation is important also.
