Hey anon unfortunately we have a lot in common. I did a type of therapy called timeline therapy, and now I can sleep through the night most of the time and rarely get nightmares. I used to have bad night terrors, would suffer months long depressive episodes and had chronic physical pain. Now when I have depressive episodes they only last 1 week max, most of the time only 3 days, and then I am back to being pretty functional. Sometimes I am even happy.

EMDR also works for stuff you can remember, as well, and was also helpful for me. I've read somatic therapy is apparently helpful for stuff you can't remember, but I've only done things like trauma release exercises so I can't say personally, but it likely does help.

If you can't find an older, white male therapist, you can do all this stuff on your own by studying psychology, learning to meditate, and doing the exercises on your own, which is what I did before I could afford therapy.

I also cut my family off and that was when I really saw bigger leaps in improving my health. Take care anon.

You can go over your childhood trauma as many times as you want but it won't actually help you deal with the problems you face today. There is some value in going back to the past, to learn a lesson or see things from a different perspective (assuming you've accumulated enough wisdom to do so). But if you're living there, if you keep replaying the same old memories over and over, there is no value in that. At some point, you have to move on.

Forgiving your parents is only hard if you have huge ego. Even when they fucked up there is a part of you that knows on some level that they didn't know what they fuck they were doing and in some cases they actually thought what they were doing was the right thing at the time. As I get older, I look back on some of the things my parents did when they were in their 20s or early 30s with me and I don't think I would've done much better in their shoes if I was parenting at that age, having been brought up in the circumstances they were. It's not to excuse behaviour but to understand it.

Right now there are generations of people that don't want to grow up. They don't want responsibilities. They would rather they revert back to their childhood state and blame their parents for their current failings. There is a point and it's definitely hitting at the time where you turn 18 and are legally more free to do things, that this carries less weight. And the complaints about that initial bad hand you got dealt in life counts for less as more and more hands are played and you're still complaining about the first one.

Even in cases where "no contact" is the right thing, it's always good to do staggered where you back off multiple times first.

my dad's side of family were zero conflict with a rigid hierarchy. I was mostly raised in my mum's house which was chaotic, but real. My Dad was just like a nothing father to me. Even when he lived at home he was a ghost of a man. My Dad is still terrified of his father at 60 and has never said no to them. The whole house was like a cult like feeling with a deranged lunatic (My grandpa) at the top who still acted like it was 1950 and my Dad just inherited his worldview. He wasn't actually scary, intelligent or had any natural authority, but my Dad spent his entire life placating them. He never individuated at all.
All dissent was pathologized. Outsiders who saw the structure were pathologized. My grandparents assumed total and unmitigated access to me. After not seeing me for months they'd literally come to my house unannounced, go around the side gate and then just let themselves in. And act as if I'd been rude if I was like "what are you doing?". They'd "take me out for a nice lunch" and essentially spend the entire time telling me who I am and why I'm like x y and z when they saw me like a few times a year. Every family event was treated like a blood obligation with zero love and coercive control. I was expected to attend every family event as an adult and keep up this illusion that Dad was some kind of loving involved parent and everything wrong with me was either my fault or my mum's. When I did actually succeed at life, they took it either as a threat or co opted it for their own ego.

I'd been distancing myself for years as much as possible, but never outright said anything, as any kind of truth in that system was dangerous. When my mum was hospitalised last year, despite not being really in my life since I was a kid, they just assumed total access. This pushed me to confront my Dad about all these dynamics and he just never responded. Now gone no contact and it's the best thing I've ever done. And this is just the tip of the iceberg.

I love my parents, dad died when I was 21 from an overdose and now my mom is left with my siblings and I. Used to hate them, but then I just came to terms with the fact the that both of them are flawed people just like everyone else and tried their best. I got married and now am out of the house for the first time with my wife. I get sad knowing I'm probably going to have to move farther away from her due to work, especially considering my sisters and brother all seem to care a lot less for her.
