I used to work with a French guy. He was generally a very chill guy. When having to deal with arrogant Indians he could always keep his cool. The time I met his wife, she was also quite annoying to him at times. Argumentative about small things. But he always knew how to deal with in a calm way. He was the guy that you could bring in as a mediator at work, he would always listen to both people and just get things resolved.We were out one night having completed a project at work. And we met in with a guy from Quebec. In all the years of working with him, I'd never seen him this angry. I don't know exactly what was said because it was all in French and I don't speak it. All I caught at the beginning of the exchange were "chum" from the Quebec guy. There was a look of bewilderment on the French guys face. I can only think that it was a result of: the Quebec guy speaking his dialect and the French guy being insulted with a kind of "what the fuck is this" reaction on his face that then seemed to start a chain reaction. Two proud men talking and then talking down to each other, at least that's what the tone of voice indicated. We had to separate the two because it was becoming clear that a fight might break out, things were that heated.When I asked him about what the fuck happened he didn't say much at all. It didn't seem like "banter" to me either, like how you might see between Anglo countries (US vs UK). To this day I don't know. Did something get lost in translation? Or do French just generally really hate Quebecois?

Sometimes the people of France just make zero effort to understand other accents, including regional accents within France. So it's pretty insulting if you get told to repeat yourself or something like that when you're both speaking the same language. Granted, they don't get much exposure to our accent while we hear theirs often so it's an asymetrical understanding too.
