The extortionists likely in another country and aren’t even involved in her disappearance and i trying to make quick money.This is probably someone who knows the family. Mrs Guthrie has a hard time getting around, so will require various people to come in and out of house to help her with chores. One of these people might have snaked a key, copied it, and broke into the place to rob her. Or one of the helpers has a key and someone who lives with them did this. She also has family living nearby and if they post updates regularly the crooks might know she lives alone and her daily routines.
