Like most forms of media there's a fraction that is made purely for consumption/entertainment. The valuable kernel (in this case, literature) strikes a range of sublime modes, engages with the ineffable, has a strong potential for affectivity, diversifies meaning/value, etc. It becomes something entirely different to simply engaging with a story. It makes me sad that it is dismissed so easily and wrecklessly but this is the nature of art: it is fragile because it isn't the sum of it's parts. Anyone can strip it of it's power and expose it to death. Paradoxically, this is where it's sublimity and power comes from: mortality.
