The 2km city center radius of Kuala Lumpur, centered around the KLCC building, is pretty nice. Everything else is jungle tier. I went there in 2019 for a business school trip. The people working there are slower than slow. Our tour guude said the rural areas had "a little bit of a terrorism problem" in the sense that Islamic separatist fundamentalists are happy to chop off heads and blow things up.

I visited briefly; it was nice, but they have a lot of racial tension. The Malays have made a bunch of strictly enforced laws about hiring Malays instead of the Chinese or Indian segments of the population, and also about relationships between people of different religions.

Indonesia has similar racial issues, and has had rioting where they targeted the non-"Indonesian" (by race) groups and mass slaughtered them. A (white American) friend lived in Indonesia for a while and dated a woman there, and she got beaten up by one such gang for dating him; this also happens in Malaysia. Not sure if Malaysia has had the same sorts of widespread race riots, though.

Overall I would say it would be uncomfortable to live in such a place, where you never know if some extremist is going to decide to break into your house and behead you for the crime of fucking a woman born into his racial group.
