Younger me assumed it was because they wanted to appeal to a broader audience and get more sales but given how broken their games are, and how shit they kept getting I'm now in the camp that actually they're pretty shit at programming games and simplifying and removing systems might be their way of compensating for that. But as you mention they have lost a lot of their original people.
