I found this pic on /n/

so we are going back to old planes now? Did they put zoomers in main engineering position and we are going full analog? Isn't old tech le bad because new tech is le good?

This shit is slow as fuck compared to modern planes.

The old turbo prop have always been more efficient than jet engines, but they couldn't reach the high speed required.
Open fan designs aren't new, but materials technologies were not up to the task in the past, especially because of the noise. Now they think they'd be able to make them viable and save another 15-20% in fuel economy.

There is a shit ton of old tech that didn’t proceed for one reason or another.
Sometimes it was as simple as “we can use this readily available part from this existing other project and have 51% efficiency over existing tech starting tomorrow @ $0.03 each ; or we can build all of the tooling and processes for this other part that will achieve 500% efficiency but will take 10 years @ $35,000 each.”
Add 30-70 years of time and now all of that expensive tooling might exist for other shit and be much cheaper.
3d printers are just old tech combined in a new way, and there are parts that cost $0.15 in 2012 prices but would have been $10,000 in 1970 because back then they were only used in satellites and precision lab equipment and they weren’t mass produced in China like they are these days.
There’s probably a lot of aviation stuff that was just too massive and got set aside over the years in favor of constant cheaper smaller improvements that didn’t require entirely new systems.

It depends on the bypass ratio. Jet engines are only as capable as the volume of air they can move, props allow an increase in this volume at the cost of high speed performance dependent on the length of the blades (for sub sonic tip velocities etc). Jet engines "don't need" props yes, however a SCRAM jet can't even start until sufficient air volume is reached as an example

This is literally just a high bypass turbofan but without the cowling to enable even more bypass
Biggest difference is variable pitch stators and the blades are strong enough where the duct and cowling can be safely removed and not pose a risk on bride strikes or blade failure

Less "old tech" and more perfecting what's already pretty good, it just looks similar to a prop

>analog

You retards don't understand what this word means. Analog does not mean "old tech" and digital does not mean "new tech." Analog means that your instrument operate along a continuum of values; digital means that your instrument has inputs encoded into discrete values of 0's and 1's which approximate the input signal. Digital circuitry became dominant because miniaturization of transistors and operational amplifiers allowed for the digitization of input data. You can absolutely have analog electronics, and physical tools which are inherently digital

>This shit is slow as fuck compared to modern planes.
All modern passenger planes essentially run on turbofans, not "jet" engines that you would see on a fighter airplane. The "jet" part of a passenger plane engine is used to create high pressure exhaust gases which spin... a fan.

I bet you think nuclear reactors magically create electricity from radioactive rocks hooked up to a battery

radioactive rocks cook water for ever producing steam turning turbines that turn dynamic which produce electricity connected to whole grid with energy substations (those that Russians bomb in Ukraine)

Batteries and capacitors store energy for stability of constant supply.

Earth is (-) and as higher up as more voltage you get from either hanging in the air cables or antennas on the skyscrapers.

Even before I took 10 seconds to look it up I figured it was just an exposed jet rotor for better efficiency. Being modern transport jets don't need to be faster. They need to cut fuel costs. This design with an exposed rotor is said to be 20% more efficient. Even 10% would be huge...

Pilots are extensively trained to handle freezing conditions and are told to avoid them.
After one crashed in the US, but before the freezing issues were known, the NTSB was absolutely stunned to find out that the French engineers knew the anti-icing was inadequate and told no one.

Apparently, a couple of crashes in Italy were blamed on the pilots despite being a result of design inadequacy and poor training.
The NTSB also pointed fingers at the FAA who rubber stamped the ATR's certification in the US without actually testing it. They just took it on France's word... sound familiar to anything more recent?

Most modern commercial jet engines have more in common with propeller-driven engines than the turbojets you see on military aircraft. For almost every jet engine you see at the airport, the fan in the front is providing most of the power. The air ingested into the engine and used for combustion is minimized, used only to turn the fan and force air around the combustion chamber. How much air goes around the chamber is expressed as "bypass ratio." Modern jet engines have a bypass ratio of 10:1 or 15:1, which means that for every unit volume of air that goes into the combustion chamber, 10-15 do not. This new engine is simply leaning into this even more, and has gotten rid of the cowling. You'll notice that the blades don't look like propeller blades, they look like turbine blades, but much larger.

I know you non STEM brainlets think Jet Engines are some sort of Rocket Motor that turns Jet Fuel into Can't melt steel beams but for 50 years now since the invention of high bypass ration Turbofan Jet engines have been just that. Fans driven by a jet engine motor. 75-90% of thrust in todays engine is produced by the Turbofan aka the propellers you see on the front spinning.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CFM_International_LEAP

Something like this has a 10:1 to 11:1 bypass ratio meaning it's basically just a fancy propeller. At this point the entire covering of the jet engine becomes meaningless hence the CFM Rises ditching of the outer covers.

ICE isn't about brown removal. They have no chance of putting the slightest dent in our 50 million illegal alien population with their masked midnight raids and van abductions.
You enforce existing laws and throw a few jewish landlords and employers in jail for housing/hiring, and suddenly everu illegal is homeless, unemployed, and headed back home. That's how you get the brown out.
ICE is to normalize masked-up soldiers in combat gear disappearing people off the street as an everyday sight.

Hydrogen is 120 MJ/kg vs 43 MJ/kg for jet fuel. Liquified, compressed hydrogen, if conformal tanking technology were available, would allow for interesting mass balance considerations that might change limitations in CG, opening up novel designs.

Aside from that, it burns better at high altitude and is carbon free with reduced contrail persistence

>>527976168
This is actually a technological advancement. That is a propfan (sometimes referred to as open fan as in OP's pic), which combines a turbofan and turboprop into one engine. you can see the compressor blades of the turbofan right behind the props here in the rendered model. By having both a prop and fan, you gain the best of both words as props are more efficient at lower velocities and altitudes while fans are more efficient at higher velocities and altitudes. This allows you to achieve maximum fuel efficiency throughout the entirety of a flight.
>>
>>527997219
ok, this is funny (and sad) but why doesn't it work?
