They will often try to stay with the person when they should just leave. They do this because admitting you were wrong and or fooled by someone is ego death of the highest order. We all like to think of ourselves as humble human beings but most people are not humble on the inside. They may project that image but inside they think they got it all figured out and everyone else is a moron. When you realize you were a moron like everyone else that is hard to accept. This is why I have so much patience with Trump voters, it's very difficult to accept a you misjudged someone to this magnitude. Many of them won't get there until he is gone.
