I've thought about this a lot. Things really accelerated and got turbo gay after the USSR collapsed. I think Western leaders at least had to pretend to give a fuck about their people when the Soviets were around, lest they end up with a gommunist revolution on their hands. I'm no fan of communists but a little competition was good for everyone. The threat of the Soviets is also what spurred so much technological innovation through the last half of the century.
