Were pirates really as deadly and dangerous as the movies and video games portray?
No one poor is truly dangerous
Pirates were very deadly because the punishment for piracy was death and they were hunted by military forces.And nobody owned a seaworthy vessel without going into debt to banks that controlled you unless they stole it.Most started as crew of imperial militaries, often recruited against their will and forced to work on deadly ships under the elements subject to enemy cannon fire. Subject to things like flogging and cat of nine tails for minor things. It was a life worse than slavery for many, and when they decided to commandere a ship or mutiny they knew they did so facing the death penalty once caught.

But they were plenty deadly.Imagine you are a merchant ship or normal sailors that has limited arsenal and maybe one or two people on your whole crew that are actually any good in a fight. Now here comes a ship full of pirates in a stolen gunship that are mostly ex-navy deserters and some assorted other criminals. They don't just outgun you, they may very well outnumber you as well because they don't have to voyage as far and thus don't need to stretch their supplies as thinly as you do. If they want you dead, you're dead unless you can outrun them. But they would be pretty shitty pirates if their boat was slow and they didn't know how to sail, so while you MIGHT outrun them thats not the safest plan in the world.Pirates would also commonly pretend to be ships in distress or fly false flags or other tricks to bait other ships into coming closer before springing the trap, which if it works takes running away basically off the table anyway.The only good news is that many pirates didn't actually want to slaughter you. If you were willing to cooperate they would take their loot and leave, no sense starting a fight you don't have to and risking losing men for no reason. But some pirates really were just bloodthirsty bastards, and those guys could be fuckers.

Because the only thing a pirate ship carried was guns and pirates. Once they took a prize ship the crew would split. Or a pirate ship so poorly ran that most of the crew was half dead. In any other scenario the pirates had control of the situation and the numbers. Or you were a frigate warship that surprised and trapped a pirate ship in a cove. Pirates were winning otherwise.
