Auroras being visible much further south is uncommon but far from unheard of. For that point in particular it's very inaccurate to say it's never happened before. Most notably the Carrington Event in 1859 creating auroras not just all through the american south which was seem as a omen and harbinger of the civil war that was right on the verge of breaking out but much much further south too having been documented in singapore being right down there at the equator. That wasn't even the only one visible in the american south during the war, just the largest. Any sufficiently large CME that hits us can cause auroras much further south than you'd expect and there's been a few times in my short handful of decades already they were visible as far south as mexico. It's uncommon enough to be memorable in a person's lifetime but not so uncommon as to not expect to see it a time or two depending on just how far south your are.
