There was kinda "invitation" thing, that some tourist company "invited". Also, had to provide 2 passport size photos togeather with passport. They will create some "dosier" about you in their IT systems.When you enter Russia, you have to register in special government organisation and declare where you will be staying within 3 days. If that organization is not present in area, then in police station. If you stay in hotel, then they will do that registration for you.Before immigrating, visit it and take a look. May be you will like it, may be things on a ground will be different what you imagine.
