The government can call an election any time, but Labour would be genuinely insane (even more so) to do that now given the current polling. Better to let a new leader see out this parliament to see if they can turn things around.

The King just has to ask someone to lead a government that can command the confidence of the house, it will be whoever is leading the Labour party. People will argue that a new election is required for nebulous grievance-inventing reasons, they will be the same people that defended the Tories changing PM repeatedly, in the end without even polling their own members. Farage will do this, he keeps complaining rules going back hundreds and hundreds of years are "discriminating" against him because his followers are low IQ fodder that left school at 16 and not familiar with how our country works.
