Here is what happened to me at WinCo. I was grocery shopping, and when I went to pay, my debit card suddenly stopped working because the chip was damaged. I was standing there alone in line, trying not to panic. I switched to my credit card, but WinCo doesn’t accept credit cards.

I did have an old debit card I barely use, and it covered most of the total, but I was still a couple of dollars short. I told the cashier I’d put a few items back.

Then the tall white cashier stopped me and said he had a couple of bucks. He paid the rest of my total out of his own pocket.

No one has ever done something like that for me before, and it honestly meant a lot.

It was uncanny for me to be helped. First time for me especially by a white person. Never experienced someone who is the same skin color as me help me before.

Is this what living in North America is like?
