The other half is that the whole state's reputation got tainted by the hippie movement, which was actually a pretty small and localized thing but it resulted in huge numbers of leftists from the rest of the country moving to CA, and most other people avoiding it when possible.Even now the contrast between locals and the huge transplant population is shocking, I grew up in LA and lived there until a couple of years ago, and the vast majority of leftist people I encountered in all of my years there were natives of red states, while the majority of people I grew up with were somewhere between centrist and far right, totally contrary to the image the rest of the country has of California as some sort of libtard spawn point.
