Say you have a gold standard, $100 dollars = 1 ounce or something. So someone loans that 100 dollars out and the balance keeps rising with interest but no new gold has been produced. Not a big deal with one tiny loan but when the whole economy runs like that the number of dollars owed starts to outpace where that money can come from. Then once people start buying and selling debt portfolios, there are more "dollars" in the system without even having to print more.
